Head of Department’s Message

Dear Students,

First of all, I congratulate you for leaving behind a long and tiring preparation period and settling in the Department of Economics and wish you success in your new profession. The profession of economics has been among the respected professions in many countries for many years and continues to do so. However, in our country, there are many economics or economics programs in the form of formal and open education in many universities. These programs produce a large number of graduates each year. However, this will not be a problem for those who graduate with good self-education. Because the education you will receive in the Department of Economics at HKU will pave the way for you to find good jobs and realize yourself with your efforts and contributions.

Economy; It is a science that examines people’s preferences for using scarce resources to meet their needs, and tries to explain economic events and how the economy works. Another aspect of economics is to make economic forecasts at the micro and macro level and to develop policies for the solution of various economic problems.

Our department is focused on providing a quality economics education that will enable you to pursue a career in your field and/or work in competitive markets. For this purpose, theoretical and applied education is given in the Department, taking into account the needs of the private and public sectors, especially the requirements of the digital economy, which is mandatory after the Covid -19 epidemic, as well as academic requirements. The theoretical training is reinforced with the Applied Training in Industry, which can be started after the 6th semester.

The teaching at the HKU Department of Economics is such that it will enable you to more easily understand and adjust yourself to the economic, political, social, technological and organizational developments in our country and in the world, regardless of the jobs you will choose in the future.

The curriculum of the HKU Department of Economics is up-to-date, rich, and largely oriented to the digital economy, apart from basic academic requirements comparable to those of the world’s and Turkey’s top universities.

Dear Students,

The general features of the curriculum implemented in the Department of Economics and the opportunities it will offer for you can be summarized as follows:

  • A quality economics education for those who will make a career or work in competitive markets;
  • Graduates who are prone to scientific research and projects on economic events, problems and economic development;
  • Opportunity to choose different areas of expertise, the main backbone of which is economics, with an effective consultancy system;
  • A flexible and dynamic curriculum of high standards, in line with academic requirements, market needs and digital global and local economies;
  • Basic Communication Skills for Academic Success, Information Technologies, Introduction to Computer Programming, Statistical Modeling, Statistical Data Analysis, Science, Technology and Digital Economy, R&D and Project Management, Philosophy of Science, Applied Entrepreneurship, Innovation Economics, Network and Internet Economy, Modern Manufacturing Systems, Linear Programming, World Food Economy courses can be given.
  • However, the innovative courses of the Department of Economics are not limited to these. For sufficient information, the lesson plan on our Web Page should be consulted.
  • Establishing and developing postgraduate programs for expertise and higher standards in economics teaching and research;
  • Opportunity to obtain a second diploma and certificate through double major and minor programs;
  • Compulsory and intensive English courses in the first year, and elective English courses in each semester;
  • After the semester, applied training (COOP, Cooperative Education) in companies, institutions or organizations in various industries for one semester (14) weeks;
  • Opportunity to participate in the Erasmus program, which aims to increase knowledge and experience in addition to a foreign language.

As a department, we are committed to doing everything necessary to graduate you with these qualifications. Regarding the field, we will share with you all kinds of professional knowledge and experience that will be required while performing your professions.

However, in order for all of these to happen, we expect you to respond to the efforts of the faculty members and assistants by working and contribute to the realization of the Department’s goals and objectives.

The language of education in our department is Turkish. However, you can voluntarily study in the English preparatory class.

The Applied Education in Industry (CO-OP) course to be taken by our students who take all courses until the end of the 3rd grade is a university-business cooperation-based education model and combines theoretical education with working life. The 14-week CO-OP training includes an uninterrupted study, all done in a single company / institution. With this training, our students will appear in front of employers as experienced graduates and will minimize the learning time in the workplace.
